VBOX Problem… solved

Last night when I was trying to run my Win XP on my VBox, I got a problem, the resolution of my guest OS (WinXP) has changed, and could not load on a full screen mode. Here what happend last night until this morning,

(one thing you should remember, that the 1 hour before, the guest OS still could run on a full screen mode, and when I restart the Linux, there come the problem)

1. OK, I try to fix the problem with re-installing the guest addition iso, but still no change, worst..

2.when I restart the guest OS, I came up with a blue screen, said DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATION

3.I thought the prob on the guest addition installer, then I try to remove the addition application,

4.OK, now I get into the safe mode system, and un-install the additional application, reboot…

5.Here come the login screen of XP, but when I try to move my cursor, *Bang*, it comes again, the blue screen with information about

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATION

6.I try to install the additional application again through the safe mode, restart the system again.. but still no change, when I tried to move the cursor, it show up the big blue screen

7.I read the error message carefully and it says, the prob on a file called intelppm.sys

8.I get into the safe mode once again, find the file and rename it with intelppm_.sys, the reboot the system again

9.Now I get into the system but, the screen resolution still not on a full screen mode (only 800×600)

10.I try to change it manually from the guest screen properties, but useless (it only gives 2 option, 400×600 or 800×600) *damn*

11.As I remember, the guest resolution should follow the host resolution, OK, now I try to change my Linux resolution into a higher resolution mode

12.I run the resolution tools, but what a cr*p, the resolution mode has reach the max mode 1280×800 60hz..

13.OK, let’s try to change it manuallt from the xorg.conf

14.Reboot the system, and … cr*p, now I could not get into my X system.well, let’s rollback the xorg again, and reboot

15.now I could get into the X, run the VBox again, and see what happen, d*mn, I still cold not load the full screen mode

16.Upgrade the VBox with the newest one… (wait…wait…wait..OK done)

17.Now run the new system and hopely, I could get into the full screen mode again.. sh*t, still got the same result

18.Oh wait, open source has teach me to do a thing, what is that..? RTFM

19.OK, now I got three option

  • VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any

will remove all limits on guest resolutions.

  • VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution resolution

manually specifies a maximum resolution.

  • VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution auto

restores the default settings. Note that these settings apply globally to all guest systems, not just to a single machine.

20.Let’s try the first step, by running

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any

run the command from shell, then fire up the VBox, ok now I try to change the resolution, WOW.. now I got so many option on the resolution not only two but many, ok let’s start change into 1024×768 and restart the system

21.Cr*p, altough the guest screen becomes bigger from before, but I still could found a big black line, both on the left and right the screen.

22.Now let’s try the second option

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution 1280x800 (as my linux host screen res)

then fire up the VBox, OK, now it become bigger but i still could not fully loaded into the full screen mode as I used to.

23.OK, the last option,

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution auto

the fire up the VBOX again, Oh sh*t, still pop up with the same result

24.OK, maybe I forget one thing behind, I check out theMachine menu option and select the Auto-Resize Guest Display

25.and CTRL-F, there you are.. now it run on a full screen mode

I still don’t know which one is the rigth step to show up this mode, but as long as I could access the guest on a full screen mode again, it doesn’t really matter.

Now, I could continue my work, debugging some application on the Windows world.

Good Luck!
